Behind the Science Safaris was founded to tackle one of conservation’s most overlooked problems: the lack of funding for researchers working to protect under-studied and endangered species. While wildlife plays a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems—and in turn, stabilizing our climate—conservation science is chronically underfunded, especially in biodiversity hotspots like southern Africa. Many essential species receive little attention simply because there isn’t the financial support to study them.
The company began after two University of California classmates discovered the untapped potential of immersive tourism to support conservation. Co-founder Camille, a PhD in Hippo Behavioral Ecology and a member of the IUCN Hippo and Crocodile Specialist Groups, has spent over a decade leading conservation projects across Africa. He and Cole created Behind the Science Safaris to connect travelers directly with the people and projects safeguarding vulnerable species—while generating real financial support for their work.
Launching in 2026, our safaris give guests the chance to witness Africa’s wildlife up close while helping fund three vital research efforts on each trip. By traveling with us, you're not just observing nature—you’re helping protect it.
Don't miss out on the opportunity of a life time to join global wildlife experts on South Africa's most nature-positive high end safari experience!
